Imágenes Líticas

2022
La Cumbre - Materia Gris, La Paz

Imágenes Líticas was an intervention/workshop involving young artists with a background in visual arts in the city of La Paz. The workshop covered a series of narrative exchanges, sensory experiments, and the creation of pictorial images later used in a series of performative interventions in the landscape of 'La Cumbre', a ritual site in the mountains at 4750 meters above sea level on the outskirts of the city.

Imágenes Líticas
proposed a collective exploration of the affects and memories related to mineral entities, those which fit in the palm of our hands and those which majestically surround us in the Andes. The workshop invited its participants to reflect on how stones and mountains are conceived as living entities, and how this understanding has survived the devastating Spanish colonization, which made use of pictorial painted images as a means of indoctrination. However, today, the use and relationship with images in these territories have been constantly transmuted. One could say that images in the Andes are also body and not just pictorial representations of the sacred.

Imágenes Líticas culminated with different somatic and sensory exercises using the human body itself to allow the paintings to peregrinate to the mountain and reintegrate them into the landscape.
