Cuerpo / Montaña

Cuerpo / Montaña takes as a reference the neo-baroque Andean painting of the 16th and 17th centuries. In motifs such as the “Virgen Cerro”,  Catholic symbols are mixed with sacred entities of the Andes: the Virgin Mary is portrayed as the body of the Cerro Rico de Potosí. These images, which appear to have a potentially subversive language by incorporating elements considered pagan, were also used by the Church as a means of Catholic indoctrination. Until today, mountains are understood as living beings and bodies are venerated as sacred individuals.

Cuerpo / Montaña represents mountains similarly to baroque images, but stripped of any Catholic iconographic elements. The mountain prevails as an individual, as a sacred being, surrounded by a golden background, evoking baroque painting. Drawing inspiration from the religious processions of the Andes, where images and statues of Catholic deities are carried through the streets, the paintings of Cuerpo/Montaña are taken this time to the landscape, using the human body as their physical extension.

Cuerpo / Montaña was part of Devenir Tierra, a group exhibition curated by Gabriela Germaná y Florencia Portocarrero in  ‘80 m2 - Livia Benavides’ in Lima.
